AMD Barcelona is Almost Here

AMD is currently holding an analyst day in which they talk about the company's current status as well as the future of the company.  Needless to say many of us are interested in AMD might have to say, and I think you'll find quite a few interesting and surprising bits of information in the slides I have found.  I'll provide some comments along with some slides that stood out to me when flipping through the presentation.

Commercial Updates

AMD was definitely touting the benefits of their merger with ATI, though they might be few and far between right now.  This slide shows what can happen to market share when you acquire another large company as AMD did.   Interestingly, I am guessing that a LOT of these additional units being counted after the merger are actually Intel-based systems using ATI chipsets.

New Barcelona Information

AMD's "Pipe" system described here seems similar to Intel's "tick-tock" analogy describing how their core designs and process technology transitions will work. 

A lot of these Barcelona power features have been known for some time, but they shouldn't be glossed over.  The ability to independently power the memory controller from the CPU cores, as well as each core completely independently is something Intel doesn't yet have in their quad-core options.
