Today, we are previewing the upcoming CPU release with a new Core 2 Duo processor: the E6750.  This processor isn't going to be put on sale today: actually the official "launch" of the 1333 MHz FSB processors will come towards the end of July.  But because Intel was confident in their ability to build these faster bus CPUs, they are giving us a quick preview of the hardware today.

The Core 2 Duo E6750 isn't much different than any other Core 2 Duo processor we have seen before; the faster FSB won't affect the appearance or performance of the platform very dramatically.

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
  • 2.66 GHz clock speed
  • 1333 MHz front-side bus
  • 8x multiplier
  • 4MB L2 cache

Let's see a few benchmarks:

Overclocking

3.84 GHz clock and a 1.92 GHz FSB

My final overclock came in at 3.84 GHz - a full 44% frequency increase!  I kept our memory speeds lower in order to keep it out of the equation.  Obviously we are talking about some serious processing power here running these dual core processors at nearly 4 GHz -- something I was nearly able to reach but the board wouldn't quite make.  I don't think the processor was holding us back though; more enthusiastic overclockers will surely reach and surpass it.

Pricing and Availability

Since this not really a launch of a processor, we don't yet have the pricing scheme from Intel for the E6750 CPU.  Later in the summer, you'll see an entire line of 1333 MHz FSB processors hitting the streets with availability within 10 days of launch day.  Until then, we sit and wait...

Final Thoughts

The future of Intel's Core 2 processor lineup looks strong with examples like the E6750 we have seen today.  While at stock speeds the processor, even with its higher front-side bus speed of 1333 MHz, wasn't much faster than existing options, the headroom we saw in our overclocking testing surely will appeal to a lot of enthusiasts.  But then who could deny the joy of running a Core 2 Duo CPU at 3.84 GHz?

Please discuss!  I have started a thread in our forums for any questions or comments you might have for me.
