While NVIDIA chose to not supply editors with samples of the 8800 GTS card at launch, there were many partners of NVIDIA that had cards ready for sale immediately.  BFG Tech was one of them and we had them send over a set to us as quickly as they could so we could evaluate the performance of these lower priced competitors.

The 8800 GTS sports a 500 MHz core clock and 1.2 GHz shader processor clock on 96 SPs.  In comparison to the GTX model, which has 128 SPs running at 1.35 GHz and a 575 MHz core clock, the GTS is definitely a step down in speed, but users looking for a price to performance metric in their range are probably still going to be pleased.  The memory system runs at 800 MHz with 640MB of GDDR3; the 8800 GTS features one fewer ROP which converts to a 320-bit wide memory bus.

How does it perform though?

The performance of the BFG 8800 GTS card was very impressive for its sub-$450 price point.  Running past NVIDIA's previous flagship GPU, the GeForce 7900 GTX with relative ease, the only competition for the 8800 GTS is actually the 8800 GTX.  User's that are looking for a new GPU for an upgrade or fresh system build will find the BFG 8800 GTS very inviting as the price is modest and the performance is spectacular.

The BFG 8800 GTS card can be found for as little as $429 and is widely available at most online e-tailers like Newegg.com.  Other NVIDIA partners have cards selling for around the $430 mark as well, including EVGA, Asus and XFX.  BFG Tech has some advantages though as the company gives gamers a lifetime warranty on their card as well as 24/7 technical support, all included with your purchase.  BFG was the first company to offer such support for our enthusiast community, and because of that they have been well received by the gaming community.

Final Thoughts

The BFG GeForce 8800 GTS card is an outstanding graphics card that promises to deliver outstanding performance for any game you can throw at it.  Our evaluation proved that the BFG 8800 GTS can handle gaming at incredible frame rates even at XHD resolutions like 2560x1600 with a price tag that won't make you cry; at least not once the gaming has commenced.  With NVIDIA SLI technology, the possibility of adding a second 8800 GTS card leaves room for improvement down the road as well.  For gamer's looking for the right card for a new gaming system, the BFG 8800 GTS is a perfect fit.
