The Sunbeam case that OCIA reviews has one of the most interesting side panels I've seen on a non-modded case.  See if it fits your style too.  If not there are 1 or 2 more reviews to try.
"Sunbeam has listened to the cries of enthusiasts for years and has included a 120mm front intake fan hole. I am not sure why they included a fan bracket, as a 120mm fan can be mounted directly to the steel shell behind it, eliminating the need for the bracket. Personally, I removed and discarded this bracket. Another great feature visible in the photo above is the fan grill. Many manufacturers use the tiny punched-holes, which do not provide adequate airflow for the fan. This style, with much larger holes, is less restrictive and allows for more cool air to flow into the case. Unfortunately, a 120mm fan was not included for this location. One can be purchased separately from Sunbeam, or you can simply use one you already own."

ThermalTake BigWater & More Fri, Nov 26, 2004 - 11:57 AM
Everything comes in kits nowadays, and watercooling is no exception.  For around US$150, you can have Thermaltakes's newest watercooling kit, and The Tech Zone picked one up to review.  Plus a guide on how to assemble watercooling systems in general and Asetek's watercooling kit as well.
"Not too long ago, water cooling was reserved for the elite, adventurous few who are willing to pay the extra bucks for the extra cooling power. A few years ago, if you wanted to do some extreme over-clocking with water cooling, you would have figure out all the parts that you need on your own, then try to find them online. All this could cost you well over $200 USD easily. Thus water cooling was off limits to most computer users, including myself."

Razor Diamondback High Precision Gaming Mouse Wed, Nov 24, 2004 - 12:41 PM
Chris Wiles | Source: Hardware Zone | Subject: General Tech

Razor Diamondback; makes it sound like one of those surprisingly good Australian 'creature' films doesn't it? Well it's not! Its actually a high precision gaming mouse from Razor/Kärna Technology (they're actually part of the same Company) that uses prisms to focus light infinitesimally. If looks are everything, then I want one and for those of you who love to LAN, they even include a nice little 'LAN pouch' so you can transport this baby safely. As for performance, well you'll just have to go and read the review at Hardware Zone, won't you.
"Gamers rejoice, the ultimate gaming mouse has landed on our shores. With a 1600dpi optical resolution and patented kärna technology, we learn that guns don't kill people, mice do. Read on to see if you're worthy to own a Razer Diamondback."
Air cooling is not for turkeys & More Wed, Nov 24, 2004 - 11:35 AM
Air cooling innovations are still coming out, even with the growth of water cooling as a solution for top preforming PC's.  With 120mm fans and multiple heat pipes being the main improvements lately, it is nice to see someone improve that which usualy gives me the most trouble, the retention clip.  Phoronix reviews the Spire VertiCool and one of the comments that stood out for me was "The Spire VertiCool is among the easiest heatsinks on the market as far as installation is concerned."
"Utilizing dual copper heat pipes and a vertical tower design the VertiCool is ready to push your AMD Athlon XP to its limits. The VertiCool is constructed with a combination of a copper base and horizontal aluminum fins to provide excellent thermal performance and weigh only 333 grams."

NVIDIA's SLI - An Introduction by HEXUS.net Wed, Nov 24, 2004 - 08:36 AM
Chris Wiles | Source: Hexus | Subject: Graphics Card
Not so much a review of a specific card, but rather an in-depth discussion on the merics of SLI technology. A very well written first piece to complement your next graphics purchasing decision. If you're interested in SLI then check out this series of ongoing articles @ HEXUS.net
"You'll have to wait for the rest of the articles, but I hope the initial look at things gives you some idea of the operating modes, what SLI can get you in terms of theoretical increases and also increases (or not) in real games. AFR is the dominant mode in the drivers at the time of writing, whether or not it offers the best performance or not, but overall it's a mode that works well. You really have to sit down in front of a system and play your favourite game, using AFR, to see if it's a mode that you can use comfortably."

Kingston Data Traveler Elite 1GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Tue, Nov 23, 2004 - 10:13 PM
Chris Wiles | Source: Bjorn3D | Subject: Storage
No sooner had I mentioned the variety of products from Kingston, than into my in-tray pops this review of their top of the range USB 2.0 Flash Drive. The Data Traveller Elite is aimed squarely at the Corporate I.T. user, combining advanced data security with outstanding performance. Briefly, features include: TravelerSafe+ access security software for Windows; 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) hardware-based encryption (privacy zone); MyTraveler file management software and boot utility and is available in 256MB, 512MB, 1GB and 2GB capacities. There is also a five year warranty. You even get a snazzy neck strap too! So if you're after a top of the line USB Flash Drive, then check out Bjorn3D's review. You won't be disappointed!

"Flash memory is a huge business right now because of consumers' insatiable appetites for more digital devices that require more and more storage capacity. They most often get this storage in the form of flash memory cards. That is not the only use of flash technology, though. Flash memory is also responsible for the proliferaion of a very popular floppy disk replacement - USB flash drives. Kingston Technology, a worldwide leader in the manufacturing of memory products, offers a full line of flash memory products."
2GB Kingston Elite Pro Compact Flash Tue, Nov 23, 2004 - 09:39 PM
Chris Wiles | Source: Legit Reviews | Subject: Memory
Kingston are well known to most people, with more than a passing interest in computers, as one of the leading players when it comes to the supply of quality PC memory. But what you may not know is that they also manufacture a diverse range of portable media, from Smart Cards to USB Flash Drives. Its nice to know that one of the better known companies isn't neglecting the growing demand from users of other electronic wizardry such as Digital Cameras, PDA's, and MP3 players. The interest in so-called LifeStyle Computing is on the up, so Legit Reviews have decided to put the Elite Pro 2GB Compact Flash through its paces. Kingston have aimed the Elite Pro at the professional, although  I'm sure the avid enthusiast will be interested too, with its lower power consumption and faster write speeds. The Elite Pro is also available in 256MB, 512MB 1GB and 4GB options.
"Now that CompactFlash (CF) memory has become popular we take a look at Kingston's flash memory line. We take their ElitePro series and see how it performs over the standard series. Is it worth the extra ~10% to get a "high-speed" CF card over the standard? We think it can be justified..."
Crucial Ballistix PC2-5300 (DDR2-667), CL4-4-4-10 Review Tue, Nov 23, 2004 - 06:20 AM
Chris Wiles | Source: Bjorn3D | Subject: Memory

Back in July Ryan announced the launch of Crucials Ballistix High-Performance Memory. Back then if you wanted to get your hands on one of the 512MB PC2-5300 (DDR2-667), CL4-4-4-10 modules, it would have cost you a hefty US$238.99. Since then prices have dropped quite a bit with these 512MB chips now available direct from Crucial for US$173.99. At time of writing  Crucial are also offering a further 4% discount via their voucher scheme. So if you're in the market for some fast reliable DDR2, then go check out this review at Bjorn3D and then go snap 'em up!
"Many of us wondered for years why Crucial, a long time leader in the memory industry, never entered the 'performance DDR' segment. I just always figured they were making enough money selling to OEMs and to the average consumer who just wanted some RAM.
....
That is no longer the case today. Earlier this year, Crucial introduced an enthusiast line called 'Ballistix,' which is obviously intended to grab gamers' attention. The Ballistix DDR has grabbed plenty of positive attention and feedback from users and reviewers alike. Crucial sent us some DDR2 from the Ballistix family, so we'll get to see firsthand if Crucial truly can deliver what enthusiasts want."

Artistic Cases & More Mon, Nov 22, 2004 - 05:00 PM
A nice spread of cases, with a style that should suit just about anyone looking at getting a snazzier case.  Pimprig's look at the warrior is the place to start.
"I was really impressed with the actual construction. Instead of using glue or rivets to attach the mesh and plastic window, they used screws with end caps. This is great feature for those who would like to personalize your case, since you can easily replace the window with your own design."

Waterblocks from across the pond & More Fri, Nov 19, 2004 - 11:35 AM
What's the real difference between Eastern Block and Western Block?  Procooling knows.  Also, Polarflo escalates the conflict with an announcement about a new series and 2 more reviews compete for your attention.
"Procooling has been trying to test more European waterblocks lately to provide a clear and fair picture of the designs and technology to our readers. Today we have a review of one of the most highly-regarded waterblocks from Germany: the Alphacool NexXxoS XP.  Conventional wisdom is that this doesn't matter because the Alphacool (and other European waterblocks for that matter) are "designed for low flow". You can see such comments perpetuated in other reviews of this block, but looking at the above graph it doesn't seem to be valid... In fact the relatively thin baseplate and accelerator nozzle make the NexXxoS block perform extremely well at higher flow rates."

NVIDIA and Intel Announce Cross-License Agreement for nForce! Fri, Nov 19, 2004 - 09:27 AM
Ryan Shrout | Source: PC Perspective | Subject: Chipset

You heard it here first, guys!  I just learned that NVIDIA and Intel have inked a deal to allow NVIDIA to develop chipsets for the Intel platforms.  Here is a link to the PR news on Yahoo.com.  Here's what I can tell you so far, based on the info in the press release and other information I was given.  First, this is a broad cross-license, which means we will be seeing multiple chipsets from NVIDIA's nForce line for Intel's platforms, probably including the high-end markets as well as the integrated graphics market.  *Edit* Here is a statement we got on the subject of segments for this new license:

"We intend to build products in every segment of the industry where we can add value with our technology.  This includes SLI platforms, as well as desktops, laptops, media centers, workstations and servers. We do not have any product specifics to announce at this time."

From this statement we some interesting information; the scope that NVIDIA wants to cover is quite large.  Also, those of you that once thought of SLI systems only going to be on the AMD platforms, now have an answer to that question (if we forget about the Tumwater solution that was a lot slower than the NF4 solution).

I also learned that NVIDIA should have product in the market by Q1 of 2005, meaning that we only have a few short months to wait before product is giong to be released.  No doubt this means that NVIDIA has been in development of nForce products for the Intel platform for some time, making all those rumors we've heard validated.  This is exciting news for the industry, and may just be the shot in the arm that Intel needs to help them get back on track for the PC enthusiast market.

The full PR is posted below, and I welcome your comments in this thread in our forums

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA - News) and Intel Corporation today announced that the companies have signed a broad, multi-year patent cross-license agreement spanning multiple product lines and product generations. Additionally, the companies signed a multi-year chipset agreement for NVIDIA to license Intel's front-side bus technology. This will enable NVIDIA to deliver the NVIDIA nForce(TM) platform technology on Intel-based systems.

"Today's agreements are significant for both companies and, more importantly, represent a win for our mutual customers who now have more choices for enhancing the PC experience," said Louis Burns, Intel vice president and general manager, Desktop Products Group.

"NVIDIA and Intel are working together to enhance the end-user computing experience," added Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of NVIDIA. "NVIDIA's product portfolio offers exciting technology options to Intel customers, including the NVIDIA nForce platform and the PCI Express-based SLI graphics technology solution."

hi-techreviews puts Scythe's new heatpipe based heatsink to the test, and gives it high marks.  Also, the ATake Phantom is a very inexpensive solution for older Socket A/P3 systems you might have running Seti@Home.  Plus, if you want to get some more control over your 9800pro, read the article at techpowerup!
"We have reviewed numerous products from Scythe USA in the past and each one of them was somehow unique in its design and the Scythe's new SCKKR-1000 Kamakiri Heatsink is no exception. Offering a total of six heatpipes cooled in what can best be described as a push-me-pull ventilation system. With this products ability to be used on seven different types of motherboards (Socket: 775 - 478 -754 -940 - 939 - A - 370) it should be one heatsink that allows the users to keep using it over and over again. When test against another major company’s heatpipe style heatsink we found out that not all heatpipe based heatsinks are created equal."

The PCI Express version of this card has been out for a few weeks, but the AGP version has finally also been released.  This card seems to be NVidia's successor to the low priced GeForce4 Ti 4200, with a fairly impressive performance boost, of course.  If jumping into PCI Express isn't in your plans, but a new videocard is, NVidia may have your answer.
Alienware Releases SFF Machine Mon, Nov 15, 2004 - 04:05 PM
Ryan Shrout | Source: PC Perspective | Subject: System
Wow, even Alienware is getting into the SFF biz now!  These are starting pretty cheap, but you can deck them out with a lot of upgrades like the Intel 560 processors and even Radone X800XT's or GeForce 6800 GTs!  Head on over to read about the technology behind it or you can just start configuring your own!
    Presenting the Ideal Solution

    Concentrated Technology
The new Alienware Area-51 5300 represents the epitome of concentrated technology. Combining the latest technology and features with an unbelievably compact form factor, this system defines flexibility. Well-suited to dorm rooms and cubicles alike, this potent system is adaptable to nearly any individual’s needs.

    Elegant Simplicity, Concealed Functionality
The Alienware Area-51 5300 proves that looks can be deceiving. Beneath the discreetly modern aesthetic is the full array of functionality you demand. With the simple touch of a button, the system reveals the optical drive of your choice. In similar fashion, applying pressure to the lower front panel uncovers a series of ports including USB and Firewire to allow you to seamlessly integrate your digital devices.

    Next Generation PCI Express
The most significant PC bus architecture change in over a decade, PCI Express is a next-generation system bus providing a high-speed interconnect designed to evolve current PCI technology and address the increasing bandwidth demands of emerging graphics in such next-generation applications as 3D games, professional 3D content creation, high-definition video editing, and more.

Not limited to graphics, PCI Express architecture will also usher in higher bandwidth for a new generation of gigabit Ethernet, high-performance storage controllers, High-Definition video capture controllers, and many other high-performance PC devices.

    Digital Realism
Equipped with a PCI-Express x16 graphics slot, the Alienware Area-51 5300 can utilize the industry’s latest and greatest graphics cards to bring users an unreal level of digital realism. Users looking for basic functionality can opt to use the integrated Intel Extreme Graphics whereas hardcore gamers and creative professionals can choose from any available PCI-Express graphics solution to suit their needs. From one end of the spectrum to the other, the Alienware Area-51 5300 is the ideal platform of choice.

    Bold statement; Silent Operation
Despite being able to utilize the fastest and most powerful components on the market, the Alienware Area-51 5300 has been engineered to remain amazingly quiet. Thanks in part to a copper-based heatsink solution using a series of heatpipes and a large radiator, even the hottest processors are able to be used. The addition of a nearly silent 92mm fan which can be throttled to keep temperatures under control ensures that you’ll focus on the system’s performance and not the noise it produces.

"Akasa, while not the original manufacturers of the chassis, have worked with the original creators to tweak it just as they like it, engineering out any initial flaws they saw and paying close attention to the smaller details and the wider cooling performance. The width of the chassis and its modular nature afford you excellent thermal performance and ease of use. It's stylish too, the all-black aesthetic tickling my fancy. Half Life 2 on Sale!? Sat, Nov 13, 2004 - 05:35 PM
Ryan Shrout | Source: PC Perspective | Subject: General Tech

I just back from a visit to our local Best Buy, and guess what I found?

The real question is now, am I going to be allowed to play it?  I'll let you know in a few!  I started a thread in our forums to discuss it and see what everyone else is finding out...

UPDATE: Well, guys, looks like this is a NO GO on playing HL2.

After installing the game, and then trying to run it, I get this setup seen above.  I first tried to play it without internet access, but of course that didn't work either.  While technically this is Best Buy's fault for selling early, Valve is going get the brunt of the storm from the "average joe" that just buys things and expects them to work...

Easily switch to watercooling & More Fri, Nov 12, 2004 - 11:46 AM

    ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Adopted Never-Seen-Before Innovations Thu, Nov 11, 2004 - 10:33 AM

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Adopted Never-Seen-Before Innovations for Reliable, Convenient Dual-VGA Graphics

Direct Power Supply and User-Friendly SLI Switch Design Provide Stable Power Source and Easy Activation of SLI Technology

Taipei, Taiwan; November 11, 2004 – ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (ASUS), the worldwide leader of motherboards, today introduced two unique features – EZ Plug and EZ Switch – on its up coming A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard for dependable power supply to two PCI Express graphics cards and easy activation of SLI (Scalable Link Interface) mode.

The EZ Plug is a direct power supply tailored to satisfy the high power demand of dual PCI Express graphics card operation, and the EZ Switch offers easy access, insertion and removal of the SLI selector card with an exclusive socket design.

EZ Plug – Direct and Reliable Power Supply

When the system is in SLI mode (dual PCI Express graphics operation), the supply of power for the graphics adaptors is crucial. The A8N-SLI Deluxe incorporated the patented EZ Plug, which provides dedicated support for the high power demands of graphics cards, maintains overall system stability, and improves graphics card compatibility.

When the power source is positioned far away from the PCI Express slots (see above diagram), the long routing causes power degradation. This also creates unnecessary noise and interferes with the performance of other components along the way. The EZ Plug is located adjacent to the PCI Express slots (see diagram on the right) to prevent power loss and maintain voltage integrity during transmission, guaranteeing dependable power supply and quiet system performance.

By minimizing power loss and maintaining consistent voltage throughout power transmission, the EZ Plug significantly improves motherboard compatibility with power voltage-sensitive graphics cards. No more picky graphics cards threatening to shut down the system due to incorrect voltage levels. Furthermore, it also enables optimum power distribution to other components since the main power supply no longer have to support the graphics cards.

Unlike the SLI solutions by other manufacturers, the EZ Plug supports the 20-pin standard, which is still currently the mainstream. Users who want to upgrade to the latest SLI platform, can save the extra cost on a 24-pin power plug. In addition, a LED light issues friendly reminders when the EZ Plug is needed to ensure the graphics cards can run at full power without compromising system reliability.

EZ Switch – Easy Insertion Prevent Selector Card Damage

A SLI motherboard requires an onboard SLI Selector Card to switch the system between SLI mode (dual graphics cards) and normal non-SLI mode (single graphics). Due to the confined space between the two PCI Express x16 slots, inserting and removing the selector card is difficult and could cause damage to neighboring components and the selector card itself.

The A8N-SLI Deluxe is the world’s only motherboard to include the patented EZ Switch. This innovative feature utilizes a special socket design to accommodate the SLI selector card, enabling easy insertion and removal. Activating SLI mode on the A8N-SLI Deluxe is a simple three-step process that users cannot experience in any competing motherboards. When repeated insertion and removal is not a concern, the life expectancy of the SLI selector card increases greatly.

The A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard will be available soon. For more information about ASUS motherboards and other high-quality solutions, please visit the company homepage at www.asus.com.

Full Sized Lightweight PC Case & More Mon, Nov 08, 2004 - 11:48 AM
Thermaltake has a nice all aluminium case, and 3DVelocity takes a good look at it.  Duelling Tsunamis, Yeong Yangs, and Liang Lis; all your favorites for a Monday morning.
"In a market full of aluminium-fronted steel cases, it's nice to see Thermaltake have opted to run with a complete aluminium construction. This may take away slightly from the rigidity but look at that weight! The 0.8mm aluminium chassis means the case tips the scales at just a shade over 13lbs without the power supply. LAN Party fans take note!"

    Watercooler or PC & More Fri, Nov 05, 2004 - 11:41 AM

Globalwin is trying out a new style of watercooling, and A True Review has it in for testing.  Take a look and see if this new stylish cooler is the right one for you.  Danger Den and Swiftech also have products being tested, if you aren't ready to make the plunge into a new style of cooling.

"Today's water cooling systems are simple and consistent in design. Generally, a system consists of a radiator, reservoir, pump, and waterblock. The working principal is that water conducts the heat from the waterblock which in turn is absorbed from the CPU. Then the water moves to the radiator for cooling. In addition, as the radiator absorbs the water's heat, fans cool the radiator. For the most part, this design works very well. Then again, there has never been a radically different design to compare it to. Rather than going with the flow, no pun intended, GlobalWin has decided to not use the standard radiator design in their new water cooling system, the Jefi. "
